Two Michelin Star Restaurant, Da Terra Occupied by Supporters of Animal Rebellion!

  • On 8/12/22 at around 18:30, 10 supporters of Animal Rebellion entered “Da Terra” in Bethnal Green and sat at tables reserved for customers of the venue.

  • This is the fifth time Animal Rebellion has disrupted a high-end restaurant since 18/11/22, the others were “The Catch At The Old Fish Market”, Gordon Ramsay’s “The Restaurant, “Nusr-Et,” and “Mana” [1].

  • Animal Rebellion is calling for a plant-based food system and mass rewilding.

  • The group says these actions will continue until the government takes meaningful action on the climate and ecological emergencies.

The luxury “Da Terra” restaurant has been disrupted by 10 supporters of Animal Rebellion. The high-end restaurant serves dinners starting at a price of £215 per person. The venue, which refuses to cater to vegans [2], has a meat-heavy menu including many of the foods with the largest carbon and land-use footprints [3].

Nathan McGovern, 23, Animal Rebellion spokesperson, said:

“Throughout the last 4 years, I’ve had to work low hourly-wage jobs at bars in a high-end hotel and even a steakhouse in order to get by and make a living. I’ve seen firsthand the cruelty and exploitation of workers, animals, and the environment the luxury restaurant business embodies.

“Exclusive establishments like 'Da Terra' are symbols of a system that is laughing at the 99% as we struggle through a cost-of-living crisis. I've lived in Tower Hamlets where this restaurant is and seen the shocking wealthy inequality in Bethnal Green firsthand.

“We need a political and social system that works for everyone, and not just the 1%. A Plant-Based Future could produce sustainable, tasty food with a much smaller carbon- and land footprint.”

Smartly-dressed supporters of Animal Rebellion, wearing green patches, can be seen occupying tables reserved for customers and holding ‘mock menus’ outlining the group’s core demands stylised as a starter, main, and dessert.

The action comes as part of Animal Rebellion’s demands for a plant-based future, which were announced on Monday 23rd of May [4]. The animal and climate justice group is urging wholesale governmental and societal support for farmers and fishing communities to transition to a plant-based food system and programme of rewilding that will secure a future for generations to come.

Animal Rebellion is a mass movement using nonviolent civil disobedience to call for a just, sustainable plant-based food system.
