Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay’s 3 Michelin Star Restaurant in Chelsea Peacefully Occupied

  • On 19/11/22, at around 18:30, 14 supporters of Animal Rebellion entered high-end ‘Restaurant Gordon Ramsay’ on Hospital Road, Chelsea.

  • The smartly dressed protesters can be seen sitting quietly at tables reserved for fine-dining guests of the establishment where meals start at a price of £155.

  • Animal Rebellion are calling for a plant-based food system and mass-rewilding programme as a key solution to the climate and cost-of-living crises.

  • As of 19:00, police were attending the scene where protestors are peacefully declining to leave.

  • At 20:00 the restaurant closed for business and the protestors left peacefully through the front door.

Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay’s 3 Michelin Star restaurant in Chelsea has been disrupted by 14 supporters of Animal Rebellion. The high-end restaurant serves dinners that start at a price of £155 per person. Dishes include veal and steak which are amongst the foods with the largest carbon, and land-use, footprints [1].

The individuals can be seen holding ‘mock menus’ outlining the environmental and social cost of the food on Gordon Ramsay’s menu, followed by the group’s core demands stylised as a starter, main, and desert [2].

Lucia Alexander, a 39-year-old auxiliary nurse from the East of England, was one of those who took action and said:

“This restaurant is the perfect example of the inequality we face in the UK right now. Whilst Gordon Ramsay serves food costing a minimum of £155 per person, more than two million people are relying on food banks in this cost-of-living crisis.

Instead of restaurants making colossal profits at the expense of animals, workers, and our climate, we need to feed everyone by supporting farmers and fishing communities in a transition to a plant-based food system.

A plant-based food system requires 75% less farmland to grow food, allowing us to feed millions of additional people without the reliance on exploitative and inefficient animal farming industries. This is THE answer to the cost-of-living and climate crises.”

On Thursday, a high-end seafood restaurant in Weymouth saw similar disruption when marine biologist Emma Smart pleaded for a 5-minute audience with David Attenborough who was dining at the establishment where meals start at £65 per person. She was filmed being forcibly removed by police and staff [3].

These actions come as part of Animal Rebellion’s demands for a plant-based future, which were announced on Monday 23rd of May [4]. The animal and climate justice group is urging wholesale governmental and societal support for farmers and fishing communities to transition to a plant-based food system and programme of rewilding that will secure a future for generations to come.

Animal Rebellion is a mass movement using nonviolent civil disobedience to call for a just, sustainable plant-based food system.
